Our family visited Santa Fe last fall and just as you, I decided golf sounded more fun than shopping. The pro shop staff was friendly and helpful. I played in just over 3 hours and had a good time. The course was in good shape and I truly enjoyed it. Little hint...I found out there are "special rates" on Wednesdays and Thursdays ($20/walking and $30/riding). I definitely recommend playing the Santa Fe Country Club if you're in the area. Great course and great atmosphere... I agree with you on most aspects.
